How I Spent Friday Night

First of all, a lovely dinner with sparkling company.

Second, I received another baked goods emergency phone call. I am, apparently, running a hotline. In this case, a chocolate cake with berry custard filling, cocoa buttercream frosting, and wrapped in fondant.

I made the gathers to match the bride's dress.

Then we used edible gold to paint on the other tiers' bands.

Making some adjustments:

Finally, another gathered cylinder to balance out the tiers (the paper cup is helping the fondant keep its shape while it sets.) The wells between the bands and the top will be filled with fresh raspberries.

I didn't have to set it up at the wedding, so I don't have final pictures, yet. Will post when I do.

I am in awe of your talents. You are a genius. Why do you not have a show on the Food Network? Why are you not charging $700/cake to strangers and people you only feel mild sisterly love for?

Carina...you really are amazing. Fondant is so hard...I won't even show pictures of my first and last fondant cake.....

Did you use gold powder mixed w/ lemon extract for the paint? That is what I have done when paining initials on choc dipped strawberries before....but yours looks shinier. Did you free hand those flowers? You are amazing, amazing.....will you give a class? I am in awe.....

Yes, you should be charging...like $1,000 a cake........

We used...vodka and gold dust. The alcohol evaporates very quickly, as opposed to juice or water, which can soak in and ruin the fondant. If you wait until the alcohol evaporates a little, the gold mixture gets thicker and easier to apply, as well as sticking better to the surface. I didn't free hand the flowers, although I could have, we used a stencil that the bride picked out. I didn't have to make the cake this time, I was there for the decoration.

Carrie- I thought we could use a little more jet in the set.

more caffeine, please said...

I'm amazed. That is beautiful. I paid $1200 for a monstrosity that wasn't nearly that beautiful. Where was my blog when I needed it??

How do you do this with an active boy???

Have you ever thought of entering those contests for cake decorating/tasting? I don't see how you could do anything but win.

This is so beautiful.

Your friends are lucky to know you...and get these cakes!!!

My cake lady had a heart attack a week before my wedding, so I understand cake needs. Even still-WHO CALLS FOR AN EMERGENCY CAKE? It is like when I worked with the shoes and brides would come in and say "I am getting married in two hours--I need white heels."

That is so fantastic that I am now afraid of you.

Rob and I didn't have a wedding cake when we got married. Maybe if I have a yard sale and save up some money, we can plan to exchange some more vows and I can hire you.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Your skills are positively occult!

Holey Moley.

Emma was just asking me yesterday if I would please get married again (her interpretation: that means another baby). I'd consider it, with a cake like this.

yen - That's the mystery. "Help! I forgot that I need the most elaborately beautiful creation of a cake anyone has ever seen! Just slipped my mind!"

Carina,

Where do these amazing baking skills come from? Learned? Inherent?

P.S. You and Courtney make such a lovely couple!

(Perhaps you could share your sewing talents and help rescue me from my hot-pink bridesmaid's dress debacle???)

that is the most amazing wedding cake I HAVE EVER SEEN! carina, carina, carina....i saw it and i almost peed my pants in horror and delight that someone could make something THAT PRETTY out of food. i've seen some pretty food in my life, but this beats the cake...ha.

or i think the correct expression would be "TAKES THE CAKE." wow, i'm such an idiot. i mess up my one good punchline. (i'm a horrible joke-teller, fyi...)

Em- it's learned through much trial and error, but a good component is the inherent desire.

Chi- I love that it was delight and horror! My philosophy is that they should taste as beautiful as they look.
Now you all know why, when a bride comes to me and wants a few round tiers with roses in between I sigh sadly. I mean, round with roses is a lovely cake, but when you could do something amazing and unusual, WHY NOT?!?! It's your wedding, have some fun! HAve a little vision people!

You have a gift an incredible gift... do you do birthday cakes and ship them? I need ideas for the man's 30th birthday

I've thought before that sometimes it would be cheaper for my friends to fly me to their homes/weddings to make their cakes than to order one from a regular baker. So if you ever come up with the cash, I'll fly out, haha.

How is the little one?

I was JUST thinking your last comment. About how it would be cheaper to fly you out and have you make the wedding cake than to order one from a regular baker. Hilarious. Also, yes, it's great to have a little vision in your wedding cakes, but sometimes it's hardly affordable. haha. I had a rather basic (but pretty!) cake so I could have my wedding and reception in a kick ass place.

That cake is absolutely gorgeous.

Frots, you're awesome. You know I heart you.

A good baker can make something unique in every price range.

carina--

just to reiterate or i guess clarify: there is nothing horror-inducing about that cake, but the fact that it is humanly possible to make something so beautiful. i hope you didn't take it the wrong way.

Azúcar said...

I didn't, I thought it was amusing. I understand that feeling, one might eequate it with being "gobsmacked."
