I'm a Little Obsessed with Waffles

You know Belgian waffles? No, not the normal deep waffles that you pull out of your Belgian waffle maker, I mean real Belgian waffles, you know, from Belgia.

When I was eight my family traveled through Brussels on their way to less frozen parts of Europe, and while waiting in the smoky train station my father bought us our first actual Belgian waffles. They’re deep welled waffles, as you’d expect, but the outside of them is covered in sticky caramel that blows your mind. My uncle, having served his LDS mission the region, had a recipe for Belgian waffles, but was never able to find the pearl sugar needed stateside. My dad, always the inventive chef, tried off and on for twenty years to recreate those insanely delicious waffles.

Two years ago, when an IKEA that carried pearl sugar opened near us, Dad tried again. He spent a month trying different recipes and techniques, but was unable to replicate the crisp, yet sticky caramel exterior of the waffles. Eventually, we realized that our puny home waffle makers would never get hot enough to caramelize the pearl sugar while cooking the waffle. And we, shedding tears of longing, gave up.

And then, I heard something incredible: Saturday, on the first day of the Provo Farmer’s Market, someone is coming to sell real Belgian waffles. Now, I love the Provo Farmer’s Market, I’ve snagged the most gorgeous jewelry, spicy tamales, hot donuts, and fresh produce on my visits. But Belgian waffles? Are you kidding me? This is a whole new dimension of awesome. Probably the 7th dimension of awesome.

Who’s in? I’ll be there (100 south 500 west, 11am) with bells on.

Well, not actual bells, probably just jeans and heels. I can’t wait!

Oh, my! I have never had a "real" Belgian waffle, but I want to now! I may just drag myself away from my computer long enough to get my hands on one of those!

Oh my, can you see the river of drool that left my mouth as I was salivating and reading about those delicious morsels you call wafels? I think I want to try some more than I want air! Too bad I don't live in UT county, or even somewhat close. Actually, that may not even stop me. Thanks for the mondo craving I now have! :)

I lived in Belgium for about 7 months and was so in love w/ the gaufres and the frites. Haven't tasted anything comparable since.

I'll be there.

Score! That's tomorrow, and I live one block away! I knew living next to the railroad tracks would pay off one day!

I've never been a fan of waffles because half the time they come out soggy. But now I know I was just eating inferior waffles. Belgian waffles sound amazing. Too bad I don't live around Provo.

great, it's raining! you should go up to SL and check out Brugges Waffles. I have a link from last Friday on my blog to their website. I thought they were pretty good...you should see if they are up to snuff.

I hope you had an extra one (or two) for me. Sitting here looking out at the rain and jonesing for a true Belgian waffle...from Belgia of course.

So sad! The waffle man couldn't make it due to the rain, he promised to be at the market every week from now on.

I did, however, try a kalbi taco. Korean and Mexican? In one delicious dish? An emphatic and marvelous YES.

Yummy! But too sad the waffle man didn't make it.

Dangitall. I didn't read this in time, anyhow. I had Orem Krispy Kremes on Saturday morn instead. Went to Sam Hawk and Pizzeria 712 while in Utah, tho. I'll have to say the pizza was my favorite. Next year, we'll meet you at Dew?
