The Great Donut Debate, I Wish It Was Still 2008 (For The Rhyme)

“What do you think about Krispy Kreme donuts?” asked Rob, a coworker of mine.
“Eh, they’re OK,” I responded.
“Just OK?” he persisted.
“The plain glazed are fine. I’d give them 6 out of 10.”
“That’s not so bad.”
“The rest of their donuts are gross. The filled Krispy Kremes are horrible. They have the worst fillings, like colored glue. Blech. They’re just sick. “
“I bet you like the donuts from Smith’s.”
“That’s disgusting. I’d rather eat dirt than a donut from Smith’s.”
“Dirt?” Jackie said, “You’d rather eat dirt?”
“Well, not dirt, but I’d rather eat nothing than a donut from Smith’s. I’ve turned them down before and will again. Daylight Donuts, those are delicious. Anyone here Canadian? How about Tim Horton’s? But Krispy Kremes aren’t good.”
Another co-worker chimed in and said, “Wow! I’ve never seen you this passionate about an opinion before!”

**BOOM**
Gosh, the sound of all of your jaws hitting the keyboard at the same time is deafening. He’s never seen me that passionate about an opinion? Contain yourselves, laughter that loud is unseemly.

The donut discussion continued to heat the cubes: what’s good, what’s bad, where’s good, and where’s bad. It was decided, mostly by Brawley Avalon, that we should have a donut taste-off. So dear readers, tell me, where do you go for donuts? Is there a hidden gem that we must include in our blind test? Am I wrong about Krispy Kreme filled donuts being the pastry of the weak and tasteless? Are you all about Banbury Cross? Whose donuts reign supreme?

(I’ll probably make spudnuts for the taste test.)

(They’re really good.)

(Yes, with actual potatoes.)

(Donut or doughnut?)

I like Tim Horton's. But we're not really near Canada...

And there is or used to be a little doughnut place on State St. in Pleasant Grove, maybe it was a Daylight, I don't recall. They were very good.

Good luck in these important matters and trying times.

You are sooooo right. I once aired my beef about the rage that is KK on the air over a local radio station--that's how passionate I feel about how completely overrated KK is around here.

Where do I go for a good donut? Nowhere. Truth is, I'm not really much of a donut girl. Having free reign of Belgian and French pâtisseries for significant time turned me into a pastry snob.

I don't really eat donuts because can't start and stop :) There is a place in my hometown called Tat-o-nuts. Made from potatoes, and they are delicious! Much more dense and flavorful than the regular!

I am a Banbury Cross devotee. I love donut and I love that place.

While I don't care much at all for donuts (it's shorter if you spell it that way), I will enjoy a Banbury Cross once a year. I have good memories of the donuts from Dick's Market up in Davis County. I like their maple bars and old-fashioned cake donuts.

I don't get the hype with KK either.

Oh--I do like donuts if they are homemade, fresh from the hot oil, freshly glazed.

But really, I'd so much rather have a chocolate chip cookie.

KK donuts make me ill. They are TOO freaking sweet. Just the thought of eating a plain glazed donut from there makes my teeth hurt.

In Montreal I perfer Tim Hortons and Dunkin Donuts1 Dunkin has grrrrrrreat donuts but crap coffee!

Grocery store donuts: Albertson's

There is a depressing lack of mom and pop donut shops in Albuquerque, so those are the only ones I'll eat.

Beyond Glazed in Draper. Raspberry Mango or Peach Cobbler. Go.

Rynell said...

Provo Bakery or homemade.

hannah said...

I actually like plain KK's, but you are right about all the others. Yuck.

I really have not found a donut shop in Utah that has anything worth eating.

Shauna said...

Yes to Banbury Cross. The taller and more cinnamon-sugar coated, the better.

Julia said...

My vote: Daylight or Provo Bakery. KK are yuck. I can't even get through 1/2 of one without going into sugar shock. Out here in California, there are slim pickings for donuts. In SoCal, we went to Albertson's, but just b/c it was across the street. And now it's Safeway, but sometimes they are way too greasy.

Provo Bakery, or crullers from Dunkin Donuts. I likde to spell it doughnut.

Kim said...

I am not a big fan of Krispy Kreme either. They do not put nearly enough chocolate on them.

I love Dunkin Donuts, but sadly there aren't any in Utah. When we were in Salt Lake, I would go to Banbury Cross. In Logan though...there is NOTHING. If I want a donut I have to go to the grocery store. I wish my kids could learn the joys of real live donuts, not grocery store ones.

Donut.

At Tim Horton's, I prefer their fruit blast muffin (and I don't even have to go to Canada for it, just NY).

I L-HUV the smell of dunkin donuts shops.

I've given up krispy kremes, they make me sick and give me heartburn. But my kids like 'em.

Never have I consumed anything more delightful than Tim Hortons.

Justine,
The last time I was at Daylight Donuts (which is what that place in PG is) I ran into Sharlee! It was fun seeing her in the wild like that.

Chatty Natty said...

Not really a donut fan as KK have also made me sick but the glazed are good. I will second the above comment about Dick's Market in Davis County....other grocery stores don't even compare. Especially Albertsons or Walmart....gross!

emily said...

I really love Dunkin Donuts, but they don't have them in Utah. Maybe you could have them sent in for the taste test?

Lindsey said...

I have not commented in ages! Being since I am a PG-Homer I just have to go with Daylight. Now that I am in Florida, the local bakery here is where I go.

KK? No me gusta.

Kristen said...

Donut.

We had a local bakery, "Billings Park Bakery," that had the most delicious donuts and cake. I swore that I would have my wedding cake made there...and then they closed. So that was the end of that dream.

Krispy Kremes taste like they are made of sugar, paste, and air. Barf.

Kristen said...

p.s. but that doesn't stop me from eating Krispy Kremes.

rich said...

Ah, Krispy Kreme... the 200 calorie bomb.

I am with you Carina on the filled donuts from KK... along with every donut that is not the original glazed. They are terrible at making other donuts. I really like the glazed donuts though.

Now being from Canada, I can definitely testify to the goodness of Tim Horton's. Nothing beating donut day when I was in early morning seminary in Winnipeg.

Ryan and Susie said...

I don't know of any amazing doughnut places in Utah, maybe this conversation will spark some creativity in someone to open one. When I have a real doughnut craving I just go to KK and get plain glazed, that's good enough for me :)

Brooke said...

You are soooo right about the horrible donuts at Smith's in fact I wouldn't eat anything from their bakery. Just trust me on that.

I'm not a huge donut fan, but the few times I've had donuts from My Sugar's Donut Shop they've been really good. It's in the middle of a business district in West Valley 2126 S 3200 W. Other than that, I would have to say Banbury Cross.

Geo said...

I weep for Dunkin Donuts.

do-nuts

It was boxes of assorted KK at an ill-attended youth activity on a hungry Saturday morning that brought my—what, almost two?—years of sugar-free, healthy, and slender to a screeching halt. I've never made it back to that happy place, nor have I forgiven.

That said, I console myself with Eliane's.

La Yen said...

Daylight in Utah. I also have fond memories of my grandpa bringing home the chocolate Dunford Donuts.

We have Dunkin out here. But for mom an pop, for reals, Texas. Best donuts in the US. Because we have such a strong German heritage. Really. Want a donut? Go to Texas.

ktb said...

Provo Bakery - love their maple bars. I like KK's glazed but the rest no.

amelia said...

Donut.

I have the same feelings about KK - I can't even remember the last time I ate one, I always turn them down.

By far, the best donuts are from Donut Man in Glendora, California (where I grew up). A little too far for your taste test, but if you're ever in Southern California, you must make a stop.

ScrapBox Organization & Storage said...

Has anyone noticed how similar KK is to KKK? j/k

Doughnuts in general are evil. Loved Geo's comment.

I third or fourth Banbury Cross, or my other favorite local gem....the Lehi Bakery on Main Street, a little mom and pop bakery that is YUMMY!

I have been reading for a little while (directed to your blog by the delicious cjane), and this was just the post to promote me from "stalker" to "valid reader". Mmm...donuts. I just have to agree with the rest of you and say blech to KK. Remember how everyone freaked out when Krispy Kreme came to Provo? It made me sad. I have to say that I like Daylight just fine, but I honestly like Kohler's bakery better (a scratch bakery) especially for their cake donuts.

p.s. Could we just eat those macarons instead?

Rocketgirl said...

A old KK doughnut? Worthless. Now a day old from Dunkin - I'd still beat someone up for it, any of the varieties. But a fresh, right out of the store KK?? One of the best things about living in the south. It's like liquid magic heaven.

This is me said...

Shipley's in Texas (or maybe the whole south, I don't know). They literally melt in your mouth. And every flavor is amazing.

I can't remember if they have WinCo in Utah but they are kind of the ghetto grocery store here in Idaho and they have really great donuts, too.

The saddest part of my ten years as a Utahn was no good donuts. Good luck with your important and much-needed research.

Mrs. Organic said...

Back in the day, I used to attend Bro. Winchell's class. There really isn't anyone who rocks the cake donut around here. If you find a good one, I want to hear about it (please).

I haven't tried them but I've heard good things about Beyond Glazed.

Mona said...

Amelia, I was going to vote for The Donut Man in Glendora, CA as well and then you beat me to it!

Nothing beats one of their fresh strawberry donuts. Warm. Oh, yum! Nothing around these Utah-parts compares.

As for Beyond Glaze, the concept is cool, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the donut itself.

jennie w. said...

I don't mind a hot Krispy Kreme. Because let's face it, anything fresh from the fat is delicious.

(cold KKs are quite vile)

I've finally gotten to the point where I have to make my own because they're so much better. Same with bagels. And all other round baked goods.

You do know it was National Donut Day last Friday, right?

And I prefer "Donut". "Doughnut" seems so affected.

The Bakers said...

Fresh Dunford bakery. There is none higher.

The Bakers said...

Ah yes, the fellow at the top was corrrect. Daylight Donuts is still open and still ever so delicious...

Colleen said...

Sweet vindication. Thank you. My husband recently declared my opinion of KK blasphemy. I've heard Lehi Bakery has fantastic donuts, but haven't tried them. I like cheap glazed donuts. Or cinnamon. Heck, I'll even eat donettes. But I'd take an Albertson's donut over KK any day.

JMadd said...

There's nothing in Utah that really floats my donut boat, but Provo Bakery is about the best here. KKs leave a greasy film on the roof of my mouth that I'm not fond of. The best donuts ever are at Randy's Donuts in Inglewood, CA. You might take your life into your hands going there, but at least you'll leave with a donut in them, too.

hoskisson said...

the albertson's near me switched to kk's for a while, blech. kk's glazed melt in yer mouth when fresh and hot, at all other times should be used as compost. If I need one I go to Macey's, not amazing but much better than kk.

If I need a truly great pastry I usually go to the French bakery on State Street between Provo and Orem.

I saw the Beyond Glazed in Draper as it is next to the new Pictureline location. Spent $190 on new camera/computer goodies and had nothing left for a donut.

fijiangirl said...

There is something in the glaze of KK that gives me a headache anytime I eat them so I avoid them at all costs. The best place for me is Winchells... 2nd is dunkin. But no one beats Winchels

Vanessa said...

KK is blah to me. Kohlers just the one in Highland I think has some pretty awesome donuts. There is a place that opened up down the road from us all for cinn rolls and donuts, I will tell you how it is.

Sadly KK's are the best donuts I've found here. You want wax? try Mr. Donut in Japan, ugh. What I could really go for? Cinnabon!

Well---to be truthful, I never eat donuts. I mean----it has been probably 3 years or so, since I had one---and it was Krispy Kreme, and I didn't like it.

But I do remember donut holes----I used to like them---chocolate---from Dunkin donuts, of course.

seetheminers said...

The ones from the Lehi Bakery are my favorite...on the main street that goes out to Saratoga Springs. I haven't actuallly gotten them from there...I eat them at the Lehi Aquatic Center and they get them from the bakery. And I agree, Krispy Kremes are over rated

I've already said this (tweet tweet) but Krispy Kreme is not a DONUT...it's overl-sweet-double-glazed BUTT. If I ever think to myself "Self, I want a squishy taste of butt" I'll head on over to Krispy Kreme.

BEST Donuts hands down = Provo Bakery. Heaven

ClistyB said...

my eyes are burning I read every freekin comment.

ok, can we get something straight on Beyond Glazed? It's a SMITH's glazed donut with a fancy looking, slightly flavored frosting on top.
Seriously, when you try them, would you personally tell me how you feel about them, because they don't fool me.

I do like the Dunford choco cake 'nut.
Banbury Cross is cool.

But my heart belongs to Stan's in Santa Clara, CA (my hometown). Unlike any other.

And he has his own fan club on FB, Stan's Fans.

I love chocolate cake donuts with chocolate frosting- and the best I have ever had- EVER- Lehi Bakery. Kohler cake donuts are also to die for.

Let me know when your taste test is, and I'll bring some just for you!

My kids see a KK and say, "Our money is no good there, huh, Mom." Once after going through the line and picking our donuts they made us leave because I had a 100 dollar bill and they wouldn't take it. My kids had to hand back their donuts. They left bawling. It was their treat for being good all day. We hate KK.

Momoko Photography said...

Krispy Kremes are not good, not even the glazed. They deflated in your mouth. I'm sorry, pastries should not deflate in your mouth. They're supposed to fill your mouth and then make you feel good that you ate them. I never feel good after eating a Krispy Kreme. If you were in Chicago, you would like this tapas place called drum roll please... Azucar. They have little delicious donut holes that you dip into thick cinnamon fudge chocolate in a little espresso cup. Soooo good. The joint is supposed to be Spanish influenced. I took your sister there, she liked it.

Agree on the KK's...glazed is OK, but the others are sick.

I think Daylight Donuts in PG makes a pretty good batch.

OK I have to comment because you are talking about donuts! :D

I love krispy kreme, so you may not care about my opinion of donuts. But I'll tell you anyways.

My favorite donuts in the world are the chocolate cake donuts from dunford donuts in Utah.

My entire family is obsessed with them. My Dad and brothers literally bring home 10 dozen of them on the airplane whenever they visit Utah. No lie!

If you live in Utah, please tell me you have tried them!

They are sold at most 7-11's in Utah but that is only if you are desperate. They are best when they are fresh - straight from the bakery.
